Glossary A-Z 1
Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding.
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.
Illustrations are also provided to assist undertanding.
Abortion
An Intervention to stop the progress of pregnancy any time after conception but before 28 weeks of pregnancy. It is justified medically if the mother’s health is in danger or if the child is severely deformed.
Law:  In most countries this is considered a criminal act. Some countries have changed these laws and legalized abortion.
Abrasion
An injury sustained when the skin is rubbed against a hard surface to cause bleeding.  The area should be cleaned with soap and clean water and covered with sterile dressing (like band aid).
Abscess
(abses)   Any collection of pus.  It usually occurs as a result of bacterial infection; a boil is also an abscess. They require drainage (letting out pus) by a surgical incision.
