Glossary medical terms 7


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Anorexia    Loss of appetite; no  desire for food.
Anoxia     Lack of oxygen supply.  it can occur if oxygen does not reach the blood in lungs , the blood can not carry (anaemia) or blood flow to the part is slow.
Antacid     Any   drugs used to  neutralize acid in stomach , such as  Gelusil.
Antenatal      Before   delivery.
Antibody      Substance produced by the immune system in response to antigen challenge during infection. It neutralizes the antigen
