Albinism
This is a disease from birth. The person
lacks specific enzymes to make the colour pigment (melanin). The hair and skin
are white and the iris is pink. These is no treatment for this condition
persons with this condition are very sensitive to light and should avoid bright
light and wear dark glasses.
Albumin
A simple protein found in all our tissues
and in our blood.
Albuminuria
Presence of this protein in the urine is a
sign of rena disease.
Alcoholism
A chronic progressive dependence on
alcohol. It car be fatal. It may be due to inherited characteristics in those
who use alcohol as a means for coping with life. These is a loss of insight and
a denial that a problem exists.
The following are attributes:
- Drinking to relieve pain.
- Drinking regularly, as a habit.
- Drinking in the morning.
De addiction centres in
hospitals and those run by non-government organizations could help. E.g.
Sanjeevani in Delhi (Ph. 4311918). Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) also has branches
in almost all cities and can be approached for help.
