GLOSSARY Medical Terms 11


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding.
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Bad breath   Unpleasant odour in breath most often due to poor cleaning of mouth, and decaying food or oral infection.
Balanitis   (bal e n tis) Inflammation of the end of the  penis (glans).
Barium  (ba ri um)Barium  sulphate is radio-opaque and therefore visible on X-ray.
To take an X-ray of the gastrointestinal system ,barium is taken either by mouth (barium meal) or as injection into the rectum (barium enema).

Bartholin’s cyst   Collection of  fluid in the glands of the same name situated at the mouth of the vagina pain worsens during intercourse.
Basal cell carcinoma    A change in the basal cell layer of the skin resulting in skin cancer.
