GLOSSARY medical terms 13


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding.
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Benign (be nine)   Disease that is self limiting  and unlikely to have long term effects.Tumour that does not spread to other parts of the body.
Beriberi   Vitamin B  deficiency.
Beta blocker    A dr eug that blocks the effect of stress hormone adrenalin on the heart cells.
Bile      A substance secreted by the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
Bilirubin     A pigment, yellow in colour produced in the liver in bile. An increase in the level of bilirbin  in blood  signifies jaundice.
Bio-feedback    A de-stressing relaxation technique where the patient learns to control his heart beat, blood pressure,muscle tension.
