GLOSSARY A-Z 71 gas gangrene gastrectomy gastric ulcer gastritis



Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Gas gangrene   Contamination of an injury with gas forming organisms in any of the situations above results in gas gangrene.
    If urgent treatment is not started, the patient can lose limb ; it may even be fatal.
 Gastrectomy   (gas trek tomi )  Surgical removal  of a part or the whole of the stomach. It is  usually undertaken for stomach tumours,
   stomachulcer,    bleeding from stomach.
 Gastric ulcer   An  ulcer in the stomach’s inner. The ulcers can be malignant. Endoscopy may be necessary for locating
    the ulcer and for collecting a sample.
 Gastritis   ( gas try is )  An inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach. It may be due to virus, bacteria, drugs, alcohol or stress.
  The symptoms are nausea vomiting and loss of appetite.
