GLOSSARY A-Z 115



Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Neuralgia (nyoo ral jia) A shooting pain along a nerve due to inflammation or pressure on the nerve
Neurosurgery   The system of surgery that treats disorders of the CNS and PNS
Neurotransmitters   Chemical substances that convery the nerve impulses in the CNS. These are dopamine, serotonin etc.
Night blindness   Inability to clearly identify  objects in semi-darkness.  One common cause of this condition is deficiency of Vitamin A in the diet. This causes a deficiency a deficiency of visual purple in the retina. This can be reversed with adequate vitamin A intake
