GLOSSARY A-Z 119


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Obesity The state of being overweight (more than 20 per cent above the weight for your height)
Obstetrics   The speciality that provides advice and treatment for pregnancy, labour and care of the mother after labour
Occult blood (o kult)   Detecting blood that is not visible in stools. This is done by testing for blood breakdown products in the stool.
Occupational hazard Any condition at the workplaces that could adversely affect health
