GLOSSARY A-Z 127


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.

Pandemic   A disease that affects large areas of the world across national borders
Pap smear  Also called papanicolau test. Cells are taken by a swab from the cervix and vagina, are stained and examined for cancer changes.
Paracentesis   Aspiration of fluid from a body cavity to relieve symptoms and test the fluid
Paralysis   Inability to move a part of the body
Paralytic ileus Loss of contraction of muscle wall of intestine usually after a surgical operation
