You’re Body Needs Your Care
NUTRITION Part 1
Food is an everyday requirement for a healthy life of citizens, along with water and air.
The quality of food is in the hands manufactures (packaged food) and shopkeeper vending food.
Civic Authorities through supervision and control need to exercise regulation over the
activities of these two sectors, to insure quality of food sold to the public.
Lifestyles to match the needs of our urban & Industrial existence are in place.
The factors that impact us and have brought about the change in our health profile are:
Affluence and diet
With progressive urbanization and economic growth, the earning capacity of citizens
in all classes has improved,
There has been a shift in food preference from fresh items to processed food.
Nutrients in processed foods are found in a far more concentrated form then in fresh foods.
Affluence has also resulted in a much higher buying power and consumption levels.
These factors overload the body systems handling abilities, leading to health hazards.
Urbanization and time constraints
The work schedules, and the pace of work of the urbanized population, are based
On productivity which in turn influences economic rewards for the workers.
Work routine take up eight hours of a day, and it often spills into the next eight
hours.
There is a take over of the time required for relaxing, eating and recreation.
In many busy commercial cities, people are seen eating their meals while
proceeding from one place of work to another.
It limits the choice of food items, people tend to eat food that is easily available and can be
easily consumed while on the move.
These factors can lead to health hazards.
Sedentary lifestyle
The heavy and continuous time demands made on professionals in urban Corporate
Structures, leaves no slot, for recreation through leisure.
The calorie consumption of the individual is constant or has increased, but due to a
sedentary life style and lack of exercise in leisure time, there is decreased use
up of energy.
A sedentary lifestyle maintained over a period of time, with
imbalance in energy expenditure, leads to obesity and other disorders like
hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease.
Health promotion efforts at work should address nutritional issues in the light of these
changes in living and working conditions.
Information is required to help all to have a balanced diet with adequate calorie intake
to match life and work conditions .
This will ensure ability to meet demands of work and leisure time.
