PROTIENS
Proteins are the primary building blocks of body tissues.
They are made up of amino acids.
Proteins are also a source of energy and release as much energy as carbohydrates (4 cal per gram).
Functions
Proteins helps to retain water within body compartments by exerting osmotic pressure.
Low protein contents causes water to stay in the tissues and results in edema or swelling.
Hormones are made up of proteins.
Digestive enzymes also have a protein component
Proteins are required for production of antibodies in our immune system,
and help in defending the body from infections
When food containing proteins is eaten, the digestive tract enzymes, breaks it down to
Amino acids, the amino acids thru the blood enter the ‘body pool’ of amino acids.
Body cells can then select those that they require in order to assemble the necessary proteins.
The body requires a wide variety of amino acids from the diet to meet all its requirements.
Most foods contain some amount of protein; complete proteins are those that
Contain all the nine amino acids required by the body for growth, development
