BRAIN THE CPU

NERVOUS SYSTEM 1c

The learn and Earn setup

BRAIN the central processing unit (CPU)
Inside your skull is the brain, it has the outward appearance of a large soft walnut, there are billions of interlinked nerve cells that make up this organ.
The chemical, and electrical, impulse passing through these nerve cells is the source of your thoughts, sensations and the control elements, of your actions.

The brain is the largest part of the CNS. The functional unit is a neuron (nerve cell) and there are 10,000 million neurons in the CNS.

The prominent part of the brain is the two cerebral hemispheres. These are the largest part of the brain, and together thy weigh 1.4kg.

The right hemisphere controls the left part of the body and the left controls the right side.

The outer layer of these hemisphere is the cerebral cortex 2-4mm thick which contains nerve cells and nerve fiber and is gray in color, this is called the cerebral gray matter below this are the connecting fibers the sub-cortical white matter. The surface shows flat folds (convolution) separated by deep valleys called fissures.

The brain is connected to the spinal cord by the brain stem consisting of Pons and Medulla.

This brain stem has motor, and sensory pathways, to and from all part of the body there are also centers to control breathing and heart rate.

Information Processing and Learning
When you are conscious and receiving information about your self and the world around you the nervous system enables you to take part in the learning process. In short incoming information to your CNS (Brain) can be:

• Received i.e. gain entry (join data base)
• Held i.e. stored in memory (kept in library for reference)
• Analyzed i.e. Pattern recognition(seeing similarity with another stored experience)
• Used in outputs i.e. thinking, writing, conversation arts
• Used to control behavior i.e. do's don’ts (in social actions) in the presence of elders your actions and words used are different

The purpose of this learning process is that in the animal world survival depends on avoiding dangers and disasters. You also improve yourself, improving old skills and learning new ones.
