THE INSTINCTIVE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Nervous System (1b)

Besides the CNS and PNS, the body has this third nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, this controls automatic functions of internal organs.

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
WHAT and HOW DOES ANS. WORK?
The involuntary instinctive signal system
That controls the automatic functions of the internal organs of the body (heart beat, breathing, digestion etc.).

This system has two parts,
-the sympathetic nerves
-and the parasympathetic nerves.

The first (sympathetic), helps the body to meet crises situations in threats to life, and limb.
The stress in these states, causes the heart beat and breathing rate, to go up as in a "fear fight or flight" response.

The second system (Para sympathetic) helps the body to conserve energy and restore the body to a balanced status.

During the activity of reading this page, this nervous system is also controlling your body temperature, your heart rate, your respiration and your digestion without you being aware of it, all this is done through the autonomic nervous system..

Many cells of the ANS, are in small groups called ganglia, which monitor and control functions like glands secretions.

The ANS in summary has two parts: the parasympathetic which deals with everyday tasks; and the sympathetic prepares the body for action in unusual situations..

YOU HAVE THE NERVE
Lines of communication
The nerves of your body, are like the telephone lines, for quick sending, and receiving back of messages.
The brain is the central telephone exchange, and the spinal cord, acts as the regional exchange.
The nerves act as information lines, connecting the brain and the spinal cord to all parts of the body.

The nervous system, enables you, through its sensory part, to collect information from the outside world.
It also collects information, from your muscles, joints, and organs inside you. Through its motor nerves, it controls muscle actions, it enables you to move from place to place, to write, talk, and paint, or play music.

As you read this page, you are taking in information, comparing this with stored information, and understanding new concepts,
Your control on your muscles enables you to sit upright, and with your eye movements, follow the line from left to right, all this occurs with instruction from your nervous system.
