SKELETAL SYSTEM I

Your face and figure are built around your bones.

INTRODUCTION The Living calcium pillars and beams of the body.
Bones are both rigid and flexible the rigidity is because of deposit of calcium in the bone.
The flexibility comes from the tough fibers of collagen in the bone.

Bones are living tissue and have within them living bone cells.
Thus there is need for supply of nutrition and oxygen.
All the bones have blood vessels going into the bone.
Bones are also supplied with nerves.

Covering each bone is a tough cover called the Periosteium.
It contains the bone forming cells and blood vessels which travels into the bone. Fig 1

Each bone consists of many circular pillars of minerals surrounding a central canal (Haversian Canal).
The bone cells lie between the circular structures and through the canals the blood vessels travel and bring nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
The bone marrow is situated in the central core hollow of the bone there is about 200 gms of red marrow.
This red marrow produces about 5000 million red cells every day.

Your skeletal system provides the firm framework for attachment of your muscles. The ligaments between bones join the bone and joints are formed. Fig 7

There are muscles in front and behind the vertebras and the bones of the legs. The vertebrae are connected to the 62 bones of the pelvis, legs and feet.

The muscles of the back and legs provide us the ability to stand upright and walk.

The chest has ribs and the breast bone (sternum) and is made up of 25 bones, they provide space and protection for the lungs, the heart and the food passage (esophagus).

The open space between the ribs has intercostal muscles which help in breathing by their contraction and relaxation, this cause an expansion and reduction the chest cavity.
