THE DEFENCE SYSTEM 1

The Immune System (Part Ia)
Border Security and Home Defense
INTRODUCTION
All of us are provided with a system that protects us from disease, produced by other living organisms (viruses and bacteria).
This is the major defense system against invasion by these organisms.
We have long suspected that this immune system does exist. It was observed, that persons who recovered from the epidemic infections, (smallpox typhoid) later on showed a resistance to the same infection, when it re-occurred in people in the same locality.
The world we live in is also home to bacteria and virus. When we enter new habitats transmission occurs (invasion) thru vecters.
These foreign agents can also enter our body through food, water or air.
The recognition of these agents and substances as foreign (non-self) and to re-recognize them again, when they re-enter the body from memory.
To remove these agents from the body,.these are the different tasks performed by the immune system.
HOW IT WORKS PHYSICAL BARRIERS( to prevent entry)
The first line of defense against bacteria and virus is our intact skin which acts as physical wall to prevent invasion.
The fatty acids in the secretions of the skin provide another acid barrier to invasion.
All our body secretions contain substances like lysozymes and interferon that do not allow bacteria or virus to multiply. The secretions also wash and flush away the bacteria (tears sweat)Any questions be sent to drmmkapur@gmail.com
