THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Immune System 2a
NATURAL AND PASSIVE IMMUNITY A free gift
This occurs when antibodies prepared by the mother in her body pass into the baby in the womb through the placenta.
It also occurs when antibodies in mother's milk are transferred to the baby.
These antibodies protect the baby for six months.
Antibodies prepared in laboratory animals can also be injected to provide passive immunity
VACCINES Produced by man
These are safe infectable mild version of the germ or dead germ.
Vaccines are available for Smallpox Diphtheria, Polio, Measles, Whooping Cough and Tetanus.
Vaccination is to provide antigens that stimulate the body (immune system) to produce antibodies in large quantity.
This results in a major immune response when a second natural infection takes place, and thus protection is provided to the vaccinated person.
