Sperms and egg race
Sexual intercourse does not always result in a new life being conceived.
The egg can only be fertilized in the 12 to 24 hours immediately after the woman ovulates.
For the egg to be fertilized, a man's sperm must reach the woman's egg when it is moving down the Fallopian tube, halfway through the woman's menstrual cycle.
When sperm are ejaculated during intercourse, they land near the woman's cervix, the neck of her uterus.
Sperm look like microscopic tadpoles, and they swim up the uterus by waggling their tails.
The sperm approach the egg, their heads dissolve in chemicals released by the egg.
As many heads dissolve, they send out an enzyme that helps one sperm to penetrate the egg.
It takes the enzymes of hundreds of sperm to break down the egg's protective barrier but one sperm may finally make it through and only one is required for fertilization.
