GASTROENTERITIS
In case of eating or drinking infected food or drink.
The symptons may appear in a few hours or a few days later.
It is also called food poisoning.
Gastroenteritis is one of the most common causes of loss of life in children in the tropics.
Severe vomiting and diarrhea leading to dehydration the main features.
The incubation period is usually 1-5 days.
Occurrence : World wide
Organism : * Escherichia coli
* Enterovirus
* Campylobacter
* Parasites
Reservoir : Human beings and animals
Transmission: Milk, water, food, flies
Self Care
* Stop feeds, take clean fluids orally or oral re-hydration salts (ORS)
* Breast feeding for infants should be encouraged.
* Bland food later
* Avoid coffee alcohol
Treatment: Dehydration due to gastroenteritis is treated with
Oral re-hydration (ORS) clean water with salt & sugar.
Drinking plenty of safe clean fluids.
Call your doctor you can not keep food down for 24 hours or vomiting does not stop for 2-3 days.
