HEPATITISB
Hepatitis B is caused by virus HBV and transmitted only through
blood and body fluids of an infected person.
It can be fatal.
Transmission
-Could be through infected injection needles (among
drug users who share needles)
-Unsterile instruments in doctor’s and dental clinics.
-Unprotected sexual intercourse and
-From Mother to the fetus during childbirth.
Hepatitis B is not transmitted through food or drink.
The incubation period is 4-6 weeks.
The symptoms are the same as for hepatitis A.
About 5-10 per cent of those infected become carriers.
Diagnosis is by the presence of hepatitis B Virus antibodies.

Avoid exposure through transmission routes described above
Vaccine against hepatitis B virus is available (Engerix-B) and is
recommended for high risk groups. There is 90% protection.
