GLOSSARY A-Z 101

Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Laceration ( lase r ashen )  A tear in any body tissue ( skin  or muscle ) .

It may be caused by a sharp instrument or stretching physical force.

Lactation Production of milk by the breasts. It starts in the mother with the birth of the child and continues as long as the child is nursed.

Laminectomy  ( lam I neck temi )  An operations to remove the lamina of the vertebra to expose the spinal cord. It relieves pressure on the cord ( due to injury or old age).

Lanolin  A fatty substance  obtained from  grease of sheep’s wool. It is used to make ointments.
