GLOSSARY A-Z 130



Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.

Parotid gland   Gland present on both sides of the face. It secretes saliva into the mouth. If there is infection, swelling occurs, as in mumps.s
Parturition (par tyu re shen)   Childbirth
Pathogen  Any organism that can cause disease in the host
Peptic ulcer  An ulcer is the destruction of the lining membrane of the stomach (gastric ulcer) or duodenum (duodenal ulcer). It is caused by the action of pepsin (enzyme) and the acid present in the stomach
