OVARIES PUBERTY

Ovaries The egg factory

The ovaries are two discs like organs measuring 4cm x 2cm close to the ends of the fallopian tubes. The all important function is to produce ova (eggs) for fertilization each of these ovaries has about 2, 00,000 follicles within which is a developing ovum.

When an egg is fully developed its outer covering bursts and the egg floates free, is guided by the fimbria, into the opening of the fallopian tubes.

Puberty

Hormone triggers the control of puberty 2.5.1 the changes that come with puberty are triggered by rising levels in the blood of two hormones: follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH)

FSH and LH both come from the pituitary gland.

The command to the pituitary to send out FSH and LH comes from the hypothalamus.

It may be that the command goes out from the hypothalamus when it has grown the right nerves for sending signals.

When levels of FSH and LH in the blood are high enough, a girls ovaries, and a boy's testicles grow rapidly.

As a girl's ovaries grow, they send out the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which produce the bodily change of puberty in the female
