THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: FEMALES
The internal organs essential for reproduction are the uterus and vagina, the fallopian tubes (two) and the ovaries (two)
Uterus The body development chamber
This is a pear shaped organ measuring 6-8 cms. Long, 5cm in width and 2.5 cm thick placed low down in the abdomen below all the other organs. It is made up of strong muscle with a hollow slit like inner cavity lined with a secreting membrane that is shed and renewed every 28 days
If fertilization occurs the muscular wall of the uterus enlarges to accommodate the growing baby. This muscular wall also contract to push out the baby at child birth nine months later.
Below the uterus is the 3 inch long tube with thin walls that are elastic and can stretch into which the male organ the penis can be inserted and the sperm deposited close to the entrance of the uterus. This vagina also allows the baby to born through this passage at child birth
