REPRODUTION MALE
The Human Body
Reproduction
Meeting in a crowd - the egg and sperm story
THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM: MALE
As a boy's testicles grow, they send out the hormone testosterone, which produces the bodily changes of puberty in the male.
The male starts producing sperm at puberty (14-16 years) and this activity continues till 70 year this maturating of male occurs under the influence of hormones secreted by the pituitary.
Changes at puberty include the development of the male organ, the increase in muscle mass, and body hair.
The male organs of reproduction are the penis, two testes, and the two vas deferens.
The prostate gland also plays a part by providing substance that the sperm need and the secretions form 20% of the volume of the semen, the rest of the volume is from the two seminal vesicles behind the prostate.
The Testis The sperm factory
These are two oval shaped organs 25 grams in weight placed in the scrotum. On cut section they show that they are made up of very fine tubes that produce the sperms.
In between the tubes are leydig cells that secrete the male hormone testosterone.
A mature sperm has a head midpiece and a tail. The head has the genetic material of the male and the tail by its movement helps the sperm to swim towards the ova in the female reproductive tract the midpiece has the mitochondria the energy producing unit.
