COMMON AILMENTS A-Z

ANGINA 2

Self care

In case of coronary artery disease, the main purpose of self care
is in preventing occurrence, and progress of the disease.
This involves changes in lifestyle.

* Stop smoking, smoking doubles your chances of having a heart
attack.
Stopping smoking does reduce the risk.
If you have stopped smoking for the past 5-10 years then the risk you experience, is the same as a person who has never smoked.

* Reduce cholesterol intake - the desirable level is below 200mg
per day.

There is a reduction of risk, with every milligram reduction of cholesterol level in the blood.

The reduction can be achieved by low-fat diet, and in difficult cases, with the use of lipid reducing drugs.

Exercise
· Exercise controls your blood pressure (BP).
· Reduction of blood pressure also reduces risk.
· Blood pressure can be lowered by reducing the amount of salt and calories in the diet, and alcohol intake.
* Exercise regularly. Any exercise which you undertake with
ease, (even walking), reduces risk of heart disease, if
done regularly.

Exercise improves heart and lung function, reduces blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood clotting.
It also helps in controlling stress and body weight.
