COMMON AILMENTS A-Z




ASTHMA
Asthma is a respiratory disorder, where the patient suffers
repeated attacks of difficult breathing.

This is due to the narrowing of the air passages (bronchial tubes) of the lungs.

The bronchial tubes become inflamed and narrow, due to irritation caused by some factors leading to contraction of the muscle wall of the bronchial tubes.

* Excessive response to allergens such as pollen, chemicals in
the environment, cold air and viral infections, and
* Swelling and congestion of the inner lining of the bronchial
tubes due to excess mucus secretion

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include repeated attacks of
* Shortness of breath,
* Wheezing (sound of air passing in narrow tubes)
* Feeling of Tightness of chest,
* Rapid breathing with prolonged expiration time (pushing out air)
* Cough, in between acute attacks and on taking exercise
* Chronic ill health and wheezing between attacks
