COMMON AILMENTS A-Z

DENTAL PROBLEMS

Fig showing dental caries and dental abscess

Dental caries is a preventable disease, and not a vague degenerating or 'rotting' of the  teeth which must be accepted passively.

Dental caries always starts on the outside of the teeth,

beginning with the enamel.

If we were to view under the microscope a section of enamel where an early cavity is likely to develop, we would see a small collection of bacteria and food remnants sticking to the smooth surface of tooth.
This collection is called plaque.

Although tooth enamel is the strongest material in the body, and

is able to stand enormous biting pressure, lactic acid (produced

by bacteria quickly dissolves it, this creates small pits and

cracks on the surface of the tooth, the acid opens up new

territory for the bacteria to live in.

Soon the bacteria reach the softer, richer dentine, where they grow faster and spread more rapidly.

They proceed into the root canal, attacking the nerves and cause great pain.

The caries can cause a dental abscess.
