COMMON AILMENTS A-Z

DIABETES (HIGH BLOOD SUGAR) 1

Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the body cells can not
make use of sugars and starches, the main source of energy.

The hormone insulin, is secreted by special cells within the
pancreas,

Insulin is essential for use of sugars; it helps sugars to enter the cells.

Diabetes results from either a lack of insulin, or an inability of the body to use the insulin properly.

Thus sugar that does not enter the cells builds up in the blood, and is lost in the urine.

There are two major forms of diabetes mellitus,
A) Insulin dependent.
B) Non-insulin dependent diabetes.

It is not fully understood as to why people develop either type of diabetes.
