COMMON AILMENTS A-Z


DYSENTERY (bacillary)
 
Bacillary dysentery is caused by bacilli of the shigella group.
This infection occurs worldwide.
The bacteria are passed in stool
Infection is spread by people handling food without washing hands after passing feces.
It can also spread through contaminated water and through flies.
School kitchens and crèches are the common source of infection
among children.
The incubation period ranges from one to seven days.
The symptoms include watery stools, pain in the abdomen, fever,
nausea and vomiting.
In case of severe infection accompanied by fever, mucus and blood are found in the stool.
Self care *Ensure sanitary handling of food.
* Drink only safe water.
* The infection lasts for 48-72 hours and is self-limiting. The
self care involved here is similar to that of diarrhea.
* In some cases, treatment with antibioties(ampacillin) might be necessary.
