GOUT
Gout is painful inflammatory response to deposits of uric acid
The primary cause of gout is imperfect production and excretion of uric acid.
Gout is most often seen in men over 30 years of age.
It is rare in women.
Usually the small joints of hands and feet and the large toe are affected.
The affected joint is red, swollen and tender.
The painful attack of gout starts in the night.
If untreated the attacks continue and pain free periods get shorter.
Self care
* Avoid red meat and alcohol
* Overweight patients should lose weight
* Drink plenty of water (excess uric acid can thus be excreted
through urine)
* Consult a physician. The treatment would involve rest to the
affected part (perhaps by slight elevation of the limbs).
Indomethacin is usually the prescribed drug.
