HYDATID DISEASE (Of interest to pet owners)
Hydatid disease is caused by any one of the three species of Tape worm the
genus-Echinococcus granulosus, multilocularis and vogeli.
The features of these three tapeworms are very similar.
Pets pass the ova in stool; this ova can stick to their fur.
These ova may ingested by pet owners and others by contact
Often no symptoms are seen.
Occurrence : World wide
Organism : Echinococcus
Reservoir : Dogs they live in intestines
Transmission : Ingestion of infective ova through contaminated
water and food. Cysts can form in the body of the pet owner over time
Self Care
* Personal hygiene should be maintained. Hands should be washed
after handling pets and before handling food.
* Dogs should be regularly dewormed with praziquantel.
* Slaghter house hygiene( Animals tested)
