Glossary A-Z 155


Technical terms come up in discussion with your physician at various stages of your meeting/ encounters with him.
 If the meaning of these terms is lost on you, you do not benefit from the discussion.
 It is therefore important that you understand the meaning and content of these terms.
This not only helps you to understand fully what is said but also helps you to ask question to clarify issues raised by your understanding. 
 
Given below are the terms which you would come across in the discussion.
They are in alphabetic order to provide ease of access.

Thyroid gland  A part of the endocrine system. It produces the hormone thyroxine  that  controls the  heart  rate and oxygen utilization in the body.
Tinnitus Hearing sounds in one or both ears when there is no external sound (ringing in the ears ). There is usually a cause. Consult an ENT surgeon if the problem persists.

Tomography    A specialized X-ray examination , usually computerized tomography ( CT scan )

Tourniquet  ( toor ni kay )  Any constricting band used to apply pressure on arteries , to control bleeding
